CNC Milling Materials
There are a few limitations regarding the metals that can be processed using CNC milling. The most preferred metal is aluminum, due to its excellent machinability, weight, corrosion and rust resistance. Materials are purchased by the lbs. and aluminum is typically twice the cost of steel but 2.75X lighter, which saves cost on raw materials.
However, with a wide variety of aluminum alloys available, selecting the right one for your CNC machining project is crucial.
Cast Aluminum Alloys:
ADC12 Aluminum A383: Offers good castability, making it suitable for complex shapes. However, it has lower strength compared to wrought aluminum alloys.
Wrought Aluminum Alloys:
Aluminum 6061: A versatile and widely used alloy known for its good machinability, weldability, and corrosion resistance. It offers a good balance of strength and flexibility, making it suitable for various applications.

Aluminum 7075
Steel is durable and has good machinability; however, steel with conventional tooling machines at a slower rate of cut than aluminum.
Stainless Steels require slower feed rates in machining than both aluminium and steel.
